  • `78 XS11 in Southern Minnesota

1978 XS11 for sale $500 firm. Its a parts bike because the engine number and the frame number do not match due to an engine swap, and I am sick of fighting with the state to proove that nothing is stolen. The seat is a brand new foam and cover last summer. The forks were rebuilt about 1000 miles ago. The head has new valve guides in it. The pipes are 4-2s with sportster mufflers welded on. The bike will come with my spaire parts, including a couple engine covers, A gutted head including cams and caps, and a complete spare transmission. The front tire is good. The rear tire is shot. It has a round head light from a later model XS. The engine would be ready to rock but my timing chain tensioner broke upon re-assembly so there is no engine damage. The carbs are competely ready to run. I had them cleaned and gone threw this winter, all jets are OEM sized. My plan was to get her back on the road this year again but I had a better offer on a different bike.
I'm trying to see if there is any intrest for anyone to buy the whole works as a parts bike. Otherwise Its going to start getting parted out.

Do you have the actual title? Most states, at least the ones around me, could care less about the engine vin. As long as the title matches the VIN on the steering neck, your good to go.

I had it. The chick at the DMV kept it when she told me I had to have the bike inspected. They sent me the little note I can take in to get tabs but it must be insepected before I can get the hard copy of the title thus transfering it.

What kind inspection do you have to do? When I registered mine last spring in minnesota I had a title that was about 15 years old and the bike had went through about 8 different owners in the time since last titled, I really didn't have any problem. Didn't have.to do any inspection though.

Its more or less just a case of frustration with the old girl. Its nickle and diming me to death. I picked it up to be a cheap-ish toy. For me its just not worth sinking more money into. I don't want to see it parted out either 11's are amazing bikes, but it needs more than I can give it.

                  Stolen?

You know guys, that in the USA you don't have to prove to authorities that something ISN"T STOLEN. If they believe it is, or might be, THEY HAVE TO PROVE IT!

                  AAGAIN, we're in the USA.!

That is perfectly true when it comes to arresting you and punishing you for stolen property. However, in this instance, they do not HAVE TO register it or let you ride/drive it on their roads. Driving/Riding on the state owned property that is paved and referred to as roads is a PRIVALEDGE! So, if you want them to be all nice and let you use their stuff, you gotta give them what they want. Of course you can always just go use it without the registration/ their permission. we're in the USA! But then, you will eventually end up with a fine, that you can choose not to pay, and then you end up in jail, where you can stay until they determine they got enough of your time to equal the payment.

So in short, nice theory, but welcome to reality!

Then again, if your willing to spend the money and sure them in court, you could probably force them to register it, but it would probably cost less to find one with a clear title, or to go through one of those title companies, or to take it to a state that has less stringent title requirements and title it there and bring it back. But in short, if it's not stolen, the is likely a way to get it done, it's just a question of it being worth the money and time to do it. You can always sell it to someone in a state that doesn't use titles for vehicles this age, and there are more than a couple of those.

And here in Ca, if they put you in Jail to pay a fine, they charge you for each day your in. So while the fine gets paid, you are also running up another bill at the same time. You can of course get work project to pay that off, but you have to pay a fee for that too.

Doesn't that just involve having a law enforcement officer verify the VIN numbers on the frame and engine? That's what they mean by inspected here. It usually takes about 15 minutes once you find a guy to do it here, and the local highway patrol actually does appointments to do it, or you can take it down to the DMV and have their inspectors check it there (at least in this state). It's to verify that the information matches the paperwork, nothing more than a formality in most cases, but one that often must take place before the title is issued. The VIN inspection is a pretty common thing, especially on motorcycles. And depending on whether the state tracks the engine VIN as well, they might want to see the sales documents for the engine (or a statement of some sort) if it's different VIN is not already documented. Most of the time thought the officer just checks the VIN, checks that it's not in the system as a stolen vehicle and signs the paper that the DMV sent you that you have to get signed showing it was inspected.

                              Would this thing run?

                              With a CCT in it?

I am thinking it's way too nice to part...and $500 (or near it) is just a mite too much to drive up and trailer home at today's gas prices... But if it runs I may be able to justify a flight up and ride it home to San Antonio (oh no the secret is out - I live in TX)

Let me know and I may make you an offer.
